Librarian Promotion Policies and Procedures Task Force

The University Libraries is committed to providing its librarians with a fair and equitable system for continuous appointment (CA) and promotion. The current policy and procedures for librarian CA and promotion were last updated in 2017, with approval by the Provost in 2018. Candidates for continuous appointment, for promotion to Associate Librarian, and for promotion to Librarian rank are evaluated by their peers based on three criteria, with different criteria at the Associate Librarian and Librarian ranks (brief overview). To ensure that this system is meeting the needs of our librarians and our organization, Dean Lisa German and the Librarian Committee, as the governance body for the job class, are forming a task force to review and update our current standards.

The task force will be composed of librarians from across the organization, at different ranks, and those with CA, on the CA-track, and with annual renewable status. The group will be charged with the following tasks:

  • Review the current continuous appointment and/or librarian-series promotion policy and procedures.
  • Identify any areas where the standards or official procedures need to be updated or clarified.
  • Develop a proposal for new or revised standards and procedures.

The task force is expected to submit its proposal to the Dean and to the Librarian Committee on September 16, 2024.
