Information Security Awareness and FERPA Training

As part of the University of Minnesota system, staff regularly work with some level of private data. New Libraries staff are required to complete two trainings that provide background in data security and highlight their role in protecting sensitive information that they may come into contact with as part of their position.  Staff should complete these trainings within the first 30 days of employment with the Libraries.

Overview: Your role at the University of Minnesota gives you access to sensitive information that must be protected. Your access to University systems and resources, such as email, makes you an important guardian of University data. This training will help you understand how to protect your own and the University's data, and how to stay safe online.

Overview: The purpose of this tutorial is to familiarize faculty and staff with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and to understand the importance of protecting a student's educational record.

These trainings are part of staff onboarding and should be completed as soon as possible after the first day of employment. After completion of each course, please forward completion emails to [email protected] for Libraries' tracking of course completion.

NOTE to Supervisors:  If you are also planning to fill out the Alma Staff Roles form for Alma access, employees do not need to send separate emails of completion to [email protected]. The Roles form provides a place for supervisors to indicate staff have taken the required courses. Indication of course completion as part of assigning Alma Staff Roles will take the place of completion emails.
