Cataloging/Metadata Group (CMG)

Purpose

The purpose of the Cataloging/Metadata Group (CMG) is to ensure consistent development and dissemination of standards, policies and procedures as they relate to cataloging/metadata, inventory and authority work, including effects on discovery and to communicate this information to staff responsible for these tasks across the system.

All Cataloging/Metadata Group meetings are open to all interested staff and are available remotely via Zoom.

Communication from the group is disseminated via the Alma resource management list ([email protected]).

Scope

CMG works to improve cataloging/metadata and associated operations by serving as a conduit for information, development, implementation, and communication of appropriate standards, policies, procedures, and best practices.

Where its work concerns Alma, the group will consult with appropriate resource staff and Alma or other library groups as needed.  Policy decisions affecting Alma must be vetted by stakeholders and the Alma operations group, recognizing that some decisions may need to be made at a higher administrative level.

In other cataloging/metadata areas, group members will work collaboratively to develop and apply standard practice.  The work of the CMG will include, but not be limited to the:

  • Communication and application of national/international cataloging/metadata standards.
  • Establishment of cataloging/metadata and inventory best practices and local standards for the libraries of  the University of Minnesota, working toward standardization and consistency across campuses.
  • Development and recommendation of cataloging/metadata and inventory needs, policies and procedures, including assistance in testing Alma’s new releases/features and recommendation of enhancements to the Alma operational group.
  • Collaboration and communication with appropriate staff/groups regarding interoperability and integration with Ex Libris and other systems, e.g. OCLC.
  • Evaluation of workflows, exploration of new technologies, and potential automation to create opportunities for redesigning processes.
  • Development of training documentation/modules.
  • Collaboration on the development of cataloging/metadata and inventory reports/analysis for system wide use.
  • Communication of information, ideas, and new developments with staff.
