Collections Facility: Overview

The Libraries is partnering with the University’s Capital Project Management office, architectural firm BWBR, and other campus units to complete a design for a new high-density collections facility. Funding for the construction of the facility was approved by the Board of Regents in June 2022. The facility will enable the Libraries to optimize the preservation of unique, distinctive, and rare materials, and allow for growth of print collections, while creating the possibility to re-envision high-demand, on-campus spaces for our students, researchers, and instructors.

Collections Planning: Overview

The Libraries are planning for collections projects related to the facility, services and operations in the facility, and other projects related to preparing for the facility’s opening. More specifically, we are beginning to plan for the following efforts:

  • Developing policies & using collection data to determine what to retain, withdraw, and move.
  • Determining the appropriate staffing, staff space needs, and procedures for the new facility.
  • Planning for the collections moves needed to populate the new facility and vacate other spaces (e.g., Diehl, PS2, WBOB, etc.).
  • Examining how services should be presented in light of the massive shift of our collections.
  • Assessing the long-term space needs of Archives and Special Collections, and how to effectively manage their growing collections.
